Who We Are

fire

We are husband-and-wife team Kevin Kutch and Mary Ellen Buxton. We met studying art in college in Colorado. After we met, Kevin picked up glassblowing, and in 1991 we moved to Brooklyn and he became studio director of Urban Glass, a nonprofit studio. Just one year later, the Port Authority sold Red Hook's deteriorated, Civil War–era Beard Street Warehouse pier; its 250 arched windows and iron shutters were repaired and 40-plus businesses moved in— including Pier Glass, our joint venture. In the spacious studio/showroom, Kevin blows glass and Mary Ellen bends and fuses it, together creating an array of sleek gem-cut and jewel-color pieces.

Working together in partnership for more than 30 years, we strive to be versatile artists schooled in various mediums. One body of work consists of raw and cut gem forms. Glass's ability to reflect refract and magnify light fuels our fascination for creating a world of optical illusions shaped from the blown interior and faceted exterior. Sketching ideas in chalk on the studio floor are the basis for our blown glass forms, these incorporate multiple air chambers, thick layers of glass and overlaid colors within the glass. We apply various cold working techniques both innovative and traditional cutting and grinding methods, allowing us the flexibility to experiment with new and unusual sculptural techniques and forms.

As we adapt, add and develop new techniques and combination of materials, our art is continually evolving . This has allowed us to move from relying exclusively upon our hot glass and cold working skills and create glass sculptures that move from purely glass forms to multi-media and architectural innovations.
